Houseplants are beautiful to look at and add great decorum to any interior design, but did you know that they have a positive impact on our health too? Not only do they add color and make your home feel cozy, but some plants have the ability to clean the air we’re taking in on a daily basis. Since most of us spend 80-90% of our time indoors, it’s important that our environment works for us and not against us in order to maintain a healthy life.

Some houseplants improve indoor air quality by adding oxygen and humidity to the air in our homes and offices. Additionally, NASA scientists have found that many of these houseplants also remove harmful gases such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene, that can be particularly dangerous for those living or working in newly built residential homes, apartments, and commercial office spaces.

Research suggests that the optimal air-filtering effect is achieved with at least one plant per 100 square feet. One large plant or several smaller ones can be used for a spacious area such as the family room, depending on what works best for your interior design.

Here’s a list of 10 plants for cleaning the air in your home (in no particular order):

  • Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
  • Florist’s Chrysanthemum (Crysanthemum Morifolium)
  • English Ivy (Hedera Helix)
  • Red-Edged Dracaena (Dracaena Marginata)
  • Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema Crispum)
  • Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum)
  • Snake Plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata)
  • Bamboo or Reed Palm (Chamaedorea Seifritzii)
  • Gerbera Daisy (Gerbera Jamesonii)
  • Golden Pothos (Scindapsus Aures)
