September Gardening Tasks

Skeletons
  • It is the beginning of the best time to plant shrubs, trees, and perennials. Dig the hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. There is not advantage adding fertilizer or compost to the planting hole. Mulch over the root area with 3-4 inches of organic material after a thorough soaking with water.
  • Control leaf-footed  and other stink bugs on your fall tomatoes with Sevin( carbaryl)
  • The citrus harvest will be heavy in many gardens. Begin using the fruit now to avoid a glut of fruit later in the ripening period. Lemons and limes are ripe enough to use now.
  • Oak trees can be grown from acorns. To check the viability of acorns drop them in a pail of water. The acorns that sink have not been hollowed by weevils and have a better chance to grow. Plant the acorns 1 inch deep in a container filled with potting soil.
