If you’re looking for a impressive way to recreate the look and feel of your yard or garden without the hassle of worrying about the ongoing drought and care of many different kinds of plants, think of rocks. Here in South Texas, rocks are plentiful, as you probably know if you’ve tried to grow anything substantial in our shallow and stony soil. The great news is that this area of Texas is also a treasure chest of diverse and distinctive kinds of rocks and stones. From river stones to granite and many other types in between, you can find the right look and feel for your outdoor spaces.

When choosing a stonescape makeover, natural rocks are the easiest and best to use. They add color and texture to your view, are a great back drop to your vegetation and are sturdy and enduring with almost no need for maintenance. Organic stones should be at the top of your list when making decisions on how to turn your yard into a true sanctuary for the upcoming spring and summer months.

The first thing you should do is create a plan for the areas in question. Keep in mind that using rocks and stones can give you fresh elevations and features than you may not have had before. Think of innovative ways you can use the rocks whether that may be building stairs, a retaining wall or a bridge. Some stones lend themselves as rustic pavers for a walk way or patio. With the color and depth of some rocks, try to imagine borders, fountains, fire pits, rock gardens or even creating nooks and crannies for your special plants and flowers.

Once you’ve let your imagination run wild and have a plan in place, remember that the rocks you choose will set the tone for the rest of the yard or garden. Do you need to add color to a drab area? Or maybe brighten up a dark area with light and sparkled stones? Is your style more tropical or more temperate? When you have a certain plan in place and a style in mind, the rockscape can truly begin to take shape.

At Milberger’s Nursery, we can help you with interesting ideas to enhance your plan and help you choose rocks and stones that you will be happy with for years to come.
