By Julia Silva. Repurpose an old plastic kiddie pool into a magical retreat for birds, bees butterflies — and maybe even a frog or two! Our toasty Texas summers can be tough on wildlife, and just like us, animals get thirsty too. Let’s give them a cool, welcoming spot to relax and recharge.
Here’s how to create your very own backyard wildlife wonderland.
- Pick the perfect spot. Choose a shady area to slow down evaporation. Even better if it’s near a rain barrel or AC condensate drip for easy refilling. If you have access to an outdoor outlet, consider placing it close enough to run a small pump to keep the water clean.
- Add a few inches of water. Shallow is best! Birds, bees and butterflies don’t need deep water. In fact, too much can be dangerous for the littlest visitors.
- Create safe landing zones. Add flat stones, bricks or sticks so insects and small critters can land safely, get in and out of the water, and take a sip without getting wet wings or feet.
- Decorate with natural touches. Scatter tree branches, ball moss, leaves and different-sized rocks to make your oasis look and feel like a secret garden. Want to go a step further? Include water-filtering plants, blooms that attract pollinators, or native grasses that provide food and shelter.
Then, just sit back, relax and enjoy the magic. Find a cozy spot nearby to watch the show — birds bathing, butterflies fluttering, bees buzzing. You might be surprised who stops by!
We’d love to see your mini sanctuary! Send your photos and stories to Gardenstylesa@saws.org and share what made your little oasis a wildlife hotspot.
