Growing plants in the fall has its advantages for both the garden and gardener. With wet and cooler weather on the horizon, your garden will blossom and it will be easier on new plants. Here’s why fall planting make spring gardens more durable.
COOLER WEATHER. Plants leaves are stressed by the hot sun, and cool temperatures lessen the demand for more water from the roots. It’s also less stress on the planter as the cool weather will prevent you from sweating too much.
LOWER WATER USAGE. During the spring and long hot summer, soil around newly planted trees and shrubs may dry out quickly requiring timely deep watering and close monitoring until established. Trees and plants installed during the fall are much less likely to dry out as quickly and forgive some benign neglect.
PLANT LATER. It’s okay if you do not plant right away after purchase. There is much less vegetative growth and less demand on the smaller root system confined in the pot. Still it’s a good idea to get your purchase in the ground or bigger pot as soon as your schedule allows.
BUY SMALLER PLANTS. If your budget doesn’t allow purchasing specimen size plants, go ahead and down size for your fall plantings. Root systems grow all winter in South Texas and your smaller plants will take off in the spring, gaining size quickly.
