FENG SHUI GARDEN

What exactly is "feng shui" and why do you hear gardeners talking about it?

Feng shui is based on an ancient Chinese interpretation of the natural world. It gives advice on how to create environments in which we feel comfortable. What better place to apply these ideas than in your garden.

To the Chinese, "chi" is the life force that must be kept in balance. The five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water are the agents of chi. Each can be displayed within your garden. The aim of your Feng Shui garden is to have a balance of these elements.

A Feng Shui garden reflects the seasons and is designed for year-round interest. It includes a concern for our environment and an awareness of the damage we might inflict on it.

To maintain some interest all year round, arrange plants with different flowering times. Plant varieties with long flowering times, plus vivid colors. Colors can affect people's moods. Purple flowers are soothing, while red flowers lift your energy level.

To make a Feng Shui garden, gardeners should plan a harmonious garden. Everything in the garden needs to be truly harmonious--to support and nourish the sense of peace. (Source: St. Louis Public Library staff)
