Year Round Care Tips
Early February to Mid-March
If your lawn had brown patch disease in the past, you are likely to experience problems again. A preventive application of a granular fungicide is now recommended. Suggested products are Ferti-lome F-Stop, Bayer Fungus Control or Terra-clone. A second application may be necessary 10 to 12 weeks later if spring weather is cool and wet.
Mid-September to Late October
If your lawn had brown patch disease in the past, a preventative application is due now.
Weed Control. We recommend applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the fall (mid-September to early November) to prevent winter weeds from germinating. Apply again in the spring (February to late March) to prevent warm weather weeds from appearing. If weeds are already present ask one of Milberger’s for the right product to apply for your particular lawn and weed problems.
Mid-March to Late April
Fertilize lawn with 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer, with slow release Nitrogen source. We recommend Milberger’s Premium Lawn and Garden Fertilizer [19-5-9]. St. Augustine lawns should be fed every 3 months. Repeat the 19-5-9 application in 12 weeks. If you prefer, organic fertilizers may be used. Their lower analysis may require more frequent applications. If a yellowish hue persists a iron supplement such as Iron Plus may be needed.
Spring and Summer - General Mowing Guidelines
The rule of thumb for mowing home lawns is to remove 1/3 of the leaf height with each mowing. When St. Augustine reaches 3”, mow it to 2” tall. During drought periods or during periods when watering is restricted allow the leaf blades to exceed 3”. This helps retain moisture and encourages a deeper root structure.
June to August
In early summer watch for chinch bug damage in the sunny parts of your lawn, especially near streets, sidewalks and driveway. Grub damage appears in late summer and early fall. Bith problems are treated with a granular insecticide. There are many on the market. We recommend Bayer Multi-insect Killer or Complete Insect Killer.
